The intersection between surfing and art is over 3,000 years old. The first depictions of surfers in visual media are found in Peru. Over the years the collaboration of the two expressive activities have bridged popular culture, commercialism, graffiti, and everyday items, and including clothes.  An artist who lives to carve waves and wood, John Olvey is expanding this visual media—literally. For Olvey, his objective is to weave saltwater and sunshine with specific media to reveal an artistic expression of the surfing lifestyle. Toward that end, not only does Olvey use surfboards to delve deeper into the mystical existence where humans meets nature and attempt to dance together in divine collaboration, but also sculpts the surface of the boards to reveal his experiences and sheer delight.
